In April 2021, the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Tsuruoka Town Campus of Keio(TTCK) and the Institute for Advanced Biosciences(IAB) based on the collaboration agreement with Yamagata Prefecture and Tsuruoka City was celebrated. At the IAB research activities using advanced biotechnology is being promoted and many joint research projects are being carried out with local companies (23 in AY 2023), contributing to the development of regional industries. Additionally, 8 venture companies have been formed to date (one of which is the only listed company with headquarters in the Shonai region of Yamagata Prefecture), creating jobs.
Furthermore, in 2009, a program that appoints students at nearby senior high schools as "senior high school student research assistants" was launched, and in AY 2023, 17 students were participating. In addition, senior high school students who dream of "becoming researchers in the future" have been accepted as "special research students" since 2011 through a system that fully supports research activities, and in AY 2023, 15 students were accepted. Among those who were accepted as special research students, there are those who have found employment at one of the abovementioned venture companies after obtaining a degree at graduate school.
At the Bio Summit for senior high school students (August 21–23, 2023), which has been held every year since 2011, 175 students from 62 schools all over Japan participated, and through this, recycling-oriented human resource development and the formation of a global biotechnology center are being promoted.
