In February of 2016, Keio University concluded a memorandum of understanding with the British Olympic Committee, the Japanese Olympic Committee, Yokohama City, and Kawasaki City to provide facilities for pre-games training camps at the Tokyo 2020 Games and to further develop mutual partnerships. In May of 2018, Keio University, Yokohama City, and Kawasaki City concluded a further memorandum of understanding regarding the hosting of pre-games camps with the British Paralympic Committee (left photo).
While the Tokyo 2020 Games were postponed for one year, preparations in collaboration with Yokohama and Kawasaki City proceeded apace for the hosting of the British national teams (Team GB and ParalympicsGB), including those to ensure that sufficient measures were in place to prevent infections. The provision of facilities was the starting point in allowing us to deepen our exchange despite unavoidable restrictions, as well as to contribute to local communities and international society. Medical staff from Keio University Hospital also worked on site at the Olympic Stadium (New National Stadium) during the 2020 games. A staff of doctors and nurses provided medical services oriented by Professor Junichi Sasaki of the Department of Emergency Medicine, who served as the Venue Medical Officer (VMO) for the Olympic Stadium.
