Nakatsu City, Oita Prefecture, is the town where Yukichi Fukuzawa grew up. He contributed to his hometown throughout his life by the establishing the "Nakatsu-shigakkō", environmental efforts to preserve the landscape surrounding the Yabakei Gorge, and other personal initiatives. With the 2019 opening of the "Shin-Nakatsu-shigakkō", a joint research institute between Keio University and Nakatsu City, our goal is to strengthen cooperation between the organizations and—in addition to our previous pledge to promote personal and community development—we aim to promote joint research, learning exchanges, and community participation.
